Fighting Medicare Fraud

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period ends March 31. Our senior health staff would like to remind Medicare beneficiaries about the importance of protecting their personal information. A first line of defense is to never share your Medicare number or Social Security number. Also, pay special attention to bills from your provider following services. When someone uses your information to submit fraudulent claims to Medicare, it’s called medical identity theft. If you find a charge for a service you didn’t receive, here are steps you can take:

Contact your health care provider. Request an itemized statement.

Review your paperwork. Medicare beneficiaries should check the Medicare Summary Notice.

Log on to Medicare.gov. You should be able to view claims information within your account.

Contact Medicare. If you determine you have been charged for a service you didn’t receive, call 1-800- Medicare.

If you have questions or concerns about your Medicare coverage or a billing statement, our senior health staff is available to help. Call us at 1-800-259-5300 or log on to ldi.la.gov/SHIIP .
