Educational Initiatives
The Division of Diversity and Opportunity works with Louisiana high schools and universities to promote insurance literacy to help students learn about the industry. Our Careers in Insurance Program creates awareness of opportunities through the following programs.
Internships. A temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training to give students a firsthand look at the insurance industry as a career opportunity.
InVest. A program offered through the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America, and an outreach program that the Office of Consumer Advocacy and Diversity has adopted. Designed to bring awareness of career opportunities available in the insurance industry.
Job Shadowing. A work experience option where students learn about jobs that are in the insurance industry by walking through the work day as a shadow to a competent worker in that field.
Currently, there are 11 high schools, three universities and one college with insurance programs that the division is partnering with through the Careers and Insurance Program. We are working with the following colleges/universities: Bossier Parish Community College, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Southern University at New Orleans, and University of New Orleans.
InVEST
Our staff works to prepare the next generation of insurance professionals. Our Careers in Insurance Program, has adopted the InVest Program. It is designed to promote insurance literacy for students. Fourteen schools across the state are participating. The program is free of charge and includes books, assignments, and materials.
The Office of Consumer Advocacy and Diversity assists schools in Louisiana with starting InVest programs. This includes arranging for industry representatives to speak to students and arranging internships and job shadowing opportunities. Guest speakers provide firsthand knowledge of what it's like to work in the insurance field, and students have a new appreciation for the industry after hearing from a professional.
